Information for Celebrity

The Celebrity is a hybrid tomato variety bred by Colen Wyatt of PetoSeed, a Seminis Seeds subsidiary. Wyatt was a vegetable plant breeder who grew and developed successful tomato hybrids during the last half of the 20th century. Celebrity gained recognition after being the 1984 All America Selections winner.

Celebrity tomatoes were developed because they are solid performers known for their multiple disease resistance, vigor and flavor. Compared with other award-winning hybrids, Celebrity is more resistant to disease-causing bacteria.

It is also a determinate plant type so staking or caging is not required. This makes the plant ideal for growing in pots or containers to adequately support the weight of the fruits. They do have thick and strong stalks. Also, Celebrity plants produce large yields. These uniformly grow well in diverse climate conditions.

The Celebrity tomato plant is a reliable mid-season producer that continues its production until frost. It can grow 30-40 standard-shaped red fruits that typically weigh about seven to eight ounces (198-226 g) each. The plant is bush-like and can get really tall. Celebrities have a no-fuss growing ability meaning they are easy to cultivate making tomato growers fond of producing them.

This tomato variety has been classified as average-tasting. However, they are lauded for their heartiness. This is because the fleshy fruits have a juicy burst of complex flavor. For this reason, Celebrities are often cooked. For fresh food preparations, they go great with grilled burgers, sandwiches and salsas. They are often canned, juiced, or sliced.

The Celebrity tomato is grown just about anywhere. Ultimately, the Celebrity is an all-around meaty tomato celebrated for its hearty consistency, weather adaptability, and strong disease-resistance.
